Diving
;
The diving season is underway, The Club boat is in the water (having fixed the puncture and lift mechanism), the first local dive has taken place out of Littlehampton.
After a last minute rally from our mechanic the boat was fixed on the Saturday evening so was ready to be launched Sunday morning for the first club boat dive of the season. We arrived at the Marina for 8:30 and after a few jobs on the boat to pump the sides up etc we launched it and loaded up the boat with our kit ready to head out to Worthing Lumps. Before we set off the first diving casualty of the day was Mick's friend who had come along minus her drysuit and therefore had to stay behind for the days adventure (Lesson 1 - check all kit is packed and loaded into the car!!!(yes including weights, before anyone else comments!!!)). We headed out aiming to be on the lumps for slack and after short trip out with everything on the boat seeming to be in good working order. We got to the site and dropped the shot at our intended location. Keith and I were due to go in first so we kitted up and descended down the shot line, first thing we noticed was that the plankton was in bloom so visibility was affected, although on the lumps was still going to be fine. We got to the sea bed at about 16 metres and moved the shot closer to the wall for subsequent divers. We then started to move along the wall investigating all gaps in the cliff face and rocks looking for wildlife. For those of you who have not dived the lumps yet it is basically a small (about 2 metres at most) cliff that runs along the seabed and is home to lots of crabs, lobster and other sea life all in abundance. As per usual for the site we spotted numerous Crabs, Lobster including squat, blenny and a plaice. Highlight of the dive for me was seeing a tree branch covered in cuttlefish eggs which was surprising because there was a tree branch 16 metres below the see miles from shore??? But the cuttlefish eggs just hung like decorations from it. After about 30 minutes we launched the SMB and ascended to the surface. When back on the boat the next buddy group of Nic, Andy and Mick started kitting up, which is when the next diving casualty appeared. Whilst kitting up Mick realised that he only had 60 bar of air in his tank which would not have been enough for any worthwhile dive on the lumps so would have to sit this out, to add salt to the wound he also revealed he did have another 2 full tanks in his car but had decided to use his 12 litre tank and had not checked it (lesson 2 - Check you air gauge when at home or at least on land before the dive when there is something you could do about it!!) Andy and Nic went in and descended sown the shot line where the started to investigate the cliff face too spotting all the aforementioned underwater flora and fauna, before ending up back on the boat. Once we had raised the Shot we started to head back to Littlehampton, on route Nic suddenly shouted "Dolphin" and pointed at the sea after a few discussions we decided to circle back to see if we could get another sighting at which point Nic, Keith and Mick got another sighting after more general milling around scanning the surrounding water but no more sightings of flipper!! We continued back to the marina and unloaded the kit before refuelling and cleaning the boat and heading home after a good dive and a few lessons learnt!! All joking aside it is always good to learn from your mistakes and others that have happened in the club to make your diving experience and others more enjoyable and of course safer, although small safe mistakes are always good for a laugh and friendly banter, I should know!!! So who am I?
Replies to info@k2divers.com .
This weekend just gone we had a good neap tide and calm seas - and only 3 people on the boat!
Nevertheless, we did have a very good, hour long, dive on the Shirala - crabs, lobsters, fish, wreckage. Beth even found an intact blue bottle complete with stopper (which I am sure she will be declaring to the receiver of wreck).
The small creatures found were a candy striped flatworm, the other was the one we saved from being Jim's dinner! Any guesses?
Many thanks to Jim who took care of the boat and did some fishing - only catching inedible fish which he reluctantly threw back.

Are you a qualified diver? BSAC, PADI, NAUI, TDI, etc? Do you book on charter boats and get paired up with any old bozo? Have you qualified abroad but just not sure what the UK has to offer? Perhaps you want to become more qualified, but without the big cost of training? Do you find your non-diving friends find your talking about diving boring? Come see our club - K2 Divers - a group of people with a love of diving in common with you. At last someone to talk to about that huge lobster you saw the other week! Expand your diving opportunities, both in the UK and abroad with a group of people you know. Come see us, try out some gear in our pool,
perhaps arrange to come diving with us to see what we're like!
